What is the Special Education Plan (SEP) Workbook?
The SEP Workbook is a comprehensive, parent-friendly system designed to help homeschool families evaluate skills, create meaningful learning goals, track progress, document supports, and reflect on growth over time.
Instead of relying on lengthy or complicated documentation, the workbook walks you step-by-step through creating an individualized plan that reflects how your child actual learns.
Who is this workbook designed for?
The SEP Workbook was created for parents and caregivers homeschooling children who need additional or individualized learning support.
It may be especially helpful for families supporting, autistic, nonverbal or minimally speaking learners, children with developmental differences, and learners whose progress may include periods of transition, regression, regulation needs, or uneven skill development.
You do not need to be a teacher or special educatioon professional to use it.
Is this workbook only for autistic children?
No. While the workbook was thoughtfully created with autism-informed learning in mind, its planning and progress-tracking system can be used with children who have a variety of learning, developmental, communication, or support needs.
The goal is not to fit your child into a particular diagnosis or learning model. It is to help you build a plan around the learner in front of you.
Can I use this with a nonverbal or minimally speaking learner?
Yes. The workbook was intentionally designed to recognize that communication and learning can be demonstrated in many ways.
Parents can consider prompting, modeling, communication supports, regulation, transitions, and other factors when evaluating and documenting progress rather than measuring success only through traditional verbal or written responses.
My child is working at a different level than their age or grade. Can I still use this?
Absolutely.
The SEP approach focuses on your child’s current abilities, needs, and next meaningful steps rather than requiring every learner to begin at the same place.
You can select or create goals that are appropriate for your child’s current learning level and build forward from there.
Do I need special education experience to use this workbook?
No. The workbook is designed specifically to make special education planning more approachable for parents and caregivers.
It guides you through evaluating your child’s current skils, identifying priorities, setting goals, choosing supports, tracking progress, and reviewing what is or isn’t working.
You can begin with what you already know best: your child.
What areas of development can I track?
The workbook organizes learning into four primary areas:
Academic Skills – including Math, Reading, and Writing

This makes it possible to document academic development while also recognizing important functional, communication, social, and independnce-related growth.
Are evaluations already included?
Yes. The workbook includes premade K–2 evaluation support as well as space to create customized evaluations for your individual learner.
This gives you a starting point while still allowing you to personalize the process when your child’s abilities don’t fit neatly into a traditional grade-level framework.
Does my child need to work on several goals at once?
No. The system is designed to help you simplify the process.
You can choose meaningful priorities and focus on one goal within an area at a time rather than feelinf pressured tosuee work on everything simultaneously.
Once a skill is mastered – or you determine that a goal needs to be adjusted – you can document the outome and decide what comes next.
What happens after I set my child’s goals?
The workbook helps you move through an ongoing cycle:
Evaluate → Plan → Practice → Track → Review → Adjust
You’ll be able to monitor progress, record supports, identify patterns, review goals quarterly, and look at your child’s development across the year.
When a goal is mastered, you can document that achievement and determine the next meaningful step. If something isn’t working, you can adjust rather than simply labeling the goal unsuccessful.
How does the workbook help me track progress without creating tons of paperwork?
The tracking system focuses on the information that actually helps you understand and support your child’s learning.
Rather than writing lengthy reports everyday, you create a consistent record that can help you see patterns and make informed decisions about what to continue, change, or revisit.
What if my child’s progress is not consistent or changes?
That’s okay – and its one of the reasons this workbook was created.
Learning does not always move in a straight line, particularly for children with additional support needs.
The workbook provides space to document transitions, regressions, regulation and supports alongside skill development so that a difficult week or temporary loss of a skill does not erase the larger picture of your child’s growth.
Progress looks different for every child. Unique growth is still meaningful growth.
Can therapists, tutors, or other people working with my child use the plan?
Yes. One benefit of maintaining an organized plan is that it can help the people supporting your child understand what you’re currently working toward.
You can choose to share relevant goals, supports, observations, or progress information with tutors, therapists, caregivers, or other members of your child’s support team.
The workbook itself does not replace their professional documentation or treatment plans.
Can this help with homeschool recordkeeping and proof of progress?
Yes. The workbook can help you maintain organized records of your child’s goals, learning activities, observations, progress, supports, and reviews throughout the homeschool year.
However, homeschool documentation and assessment requirements vary by state and individual circumstances. The SEP Workbook is an organizational and educational planning resource and does not guarantee that any particular documentation will satisfy your state’s legal homeschool requirements.
Parents should review their current state requirements when determining what records or assessments they need to maintain.
Does this replace an IEP or professional evaluation?
No. The SEP Workbook is a homeschool planning and documentation tool. It is not an IEP, medical assessment, diagnosis, therapy plan, or substitute for professional educational, medical, therapeutic, or legal advice.
Instead, it gives parents a structured way to organize what they observe at home, establish learning priorities, document progress, and better understand their child’s changing needs.
It may also give you organized information that you can choose to discuss with educators, therapists, evaluators, or other professionals involved in your child’s support.
There are more than 350 pages. Do I have to use all of them?
No—and you shouldn’t feel like you have to.
The workbook is comprehensive because different families need different tools at different times. You use the pages that support your child’s current plan and return to additional resources when you need them.
